A method for music composition by the use of impression evaluation according to classification of phrase type

On the development of music cognition research, it has been claimed thatthe musical essence were lost because it subdivides sounds too much. With the development of technological researches such as the field of Music Acoustics, the opinions of music cognition research from a musician’s point of view and the opportunities to review the importance of artistic expression have become more important.

This thesis suggests a method of music composition that comes from both objectivity and subjectivity views, supposing the research about music cognition and composition from a musician’s standpoint. A concrete flow is as follows:

First, the target is only limited to a phrase(a melody outline). According to classification of phrase type on melody and rhythm, nine phrases were composed. Then, in order to express musical characters, six adjectives – joyful, calm, passionate, solemn, capricious, and easy-to-memorize – were chosen and an impression evaluation experiment was performed for examining how much each adjective fits for a composed phrase. Balancing applicability and scientific validity of the experiment, all phrases were performed in piano solo with a programmed synthesizer, with the minimum chord progression of mean chords(non-major/non-minor) and with the tempo of BPM 100. Through an analysis of the experiment, it was systematically investigated that the tendency of impressions each phrase gives on listeners and what musical elements cause these effects. Finally, the possibility to apply the results of the experiment to music composition is examined. It is suggested that the method will be useful in the case of giving listeners the similar impression for the use of stage/screen music, or the situation that a composer wants to know the tendency of phrase
impressions.
