This paper discusses about phrasing expression and the methods, which is one of the performance expressions in piano. The foci of this study is on the use of the phrasing methods depending on the size of phrasing, whether phrasing method has hierarchical structure, and the relationship between tempo, velocity, and phrasing method. The study included two experiments. Experiment 1 was aimed at recording MIDI data for analyzing the phrasing methods. Six pianists played two pieces each in three phrasing types, namely “Iong,” “middle” and “short” phrasings, and were captured as MIDI sequences. Then, cach performer reported the intended phrasings when performance were done. The recorded pieces were J. S. Bach “Prelude No.1 in C major, BWV846, in The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I” and W. A. Mozart “Piano Sonata No.11 in A major, K.331.” Experiment 2 was aimed to confirm that recorded performances sufficiently express performer’s intended phrasings. There, performers were presented with all recorded performances, and instructed to estimate the phrasings intended by the performer.

On experiment 1, analyses were started with calculating siOI and velocity from the recorded performance. Observations of the plotted graphs were done with performer’s intended phrasings and outliers in sIOI and velocity. As a result, the followings were found. First, “ridged shape” phrasing method that both tempo and velocity rises and drops gradually centering at the peak was observed only six times in all phrasings of all performances. The ridge method of tempo or velocity alone were also observed, but this method were considered to be used for expression other than phrasing. Secondly, “gap” method that a temporal gap is placed between two consecutive phrasings. This method was frequently observed in recorded performances except for the short phrasing performances. And, it was suggested that a short gap expresses intended phrasing and that a long gap expresses a large musical structure. Thirdly, “stress” method that an accent is applied at the beginning of a phrasing were not observed. However, a method that applying a velocity difference between the end of one phrasing and the beginning of the next phrasing was observed. The latter method scems to express a simple musical structure and be expression peculiar to the performer depending on the piece. From further analysis on whether the hierarchical structure was expressed, it was found that the performer’s intended phrasing had hierarchical structure but the performances did not.

In the analyses of experiment 2, the responses were divided into four categories, and calculations of various response proportions and classification of stimuli were done based on observations of the majority of responses. As the first result, only a half of answers was correctly answered their intended phrasings. From this, it was discovered that a half of the recorded performances accurately expressed the intended phrasings. Next, in order to clarify whether there is a difference in the phrasing methods between the phrasings that were correctly estimated and not, three-way analysis of variance was done on the hit/miss ratio of the sIOI outliers against the total number of the intended phrasings in each performances. As a result, there were no significant differences. From this, it was concluded that there was no significant difference in the hit/miss ratio between performances. Further investigation on the differences between the correct and incorrect estimation of the phrasings is necessary.

Among the three phrasing methods in the experiment 1, only the “gap” type was observed, and it is suggesting the possibility of dividing the methods between two expressions of simple musical structure and phrasings. In addition, it was found that the performances in which the intended phrasings was accurately perceived was about a half, and that the difference in the method in which the intended phrasing were estimated or not was not the hit/miss rate between the outlier and the intended phasing. A method that makes that difference and a verification of other trends seen in this study are left for the future studies. In this study, analysis was done mainly by observation and classification and quantitative analyses were not done. Thus, this is also included in the further investigation tasks.
