The Distance Between Microphones in Stereo Recording (AB system) and Its Relation to Subjective Playback Sound Image Width

The recording of classical music is based on the experience and sensibility of recording engineers, and is recorded with the intention of reproducing the same performance space and sound image. Many variables such as position, angle and directional characteristics of the microphones affects this goal. The distance between the microphones is one of these variable. In general, it is said that if the left and right sound signal correlation becomes lower, sound image width becomes wider. However, little research into the subjective playback sound image width and the distance between microphones has been done. Therefore, changes in the subjective sound image width caused by the distance between microphones are not yet well understood.

In this paper, author focuses on the sound image width element of the spatial impression, and two subjective evaluation tests using the AB microphone setup.

test 1. the distance between microphones and its relation to Subjective Sound Image Width.

test 2. the distance between microphones and its relation to Recording Angle.

In test 1, an experiment using Scheffe pairwise comparison of 6 different distances between microphones, which ranged from 30cm to 80cm, was conducted. The sound stimuli used in this test were a solo violin and pink noise. The results showed that the distance between microphones was proportional to the subjective sound image width up to 60cm in both sound stimuli, however in a distance equal or larger than 70cm this proportion was not observed. The correlation between interaural cross-correlation (IACC), inter-aural level difference (ILD )and inter-aural time difference (ITD) used as a predictive model of the apparent source width were also investigated, however, a direct relation with the subjective evaluations was not observed.

In test 2, the measurements regarding distance between microphones, were copied from test 1. During the recording, the sound source was shifted in steps of 5° from 0°(center) to 90° (right), and later the subjects were asked to localize this sound during reproduction. The sound stimuli used in this test were the same as test 1, with the addition of a female voice. From the subjects responses, it could be found that the sound source localized at 22.5° was in the 75% recording angle [ 75% of the angle between the speakers (+ 30 °)].

It was found that as the distance between microphones increased up to 50cm, the recording angle became narrower. However, for the female voice, the recording angle becomes wider at 60 and 70cm, while pink noise only becomes wider at 70cm. It can be concluded from this results that a distance between microphones larger than 60cm does not necessarily have a linear relationship with the recording angle.

It was concluded that with an AB recording technique, there is a linear relationship regarding the distance between microphones and subjective sound image width up to 50cm. However, for some sound stimuli, a distance of 60cm or more does not present this linear relationship. It is believed by the author that the cause of this effect is related to the frequency and time domain characteristics of the sound source,
