Evaluation of Saxophone timbre change of playing dynamics
It is often difficult to distinguish between musical instruments of the same family such as between alto and tenor saxophones. Also, it is one of the challenges performers face when learning to intentionally make the sounds distinguishable. In this study, the author focused on the changes in the saxophone timbre when their dynamics were controlled by a performer. A subjective evaluation experiment using the recorded single-note performance sounds was done, and the results were analyzed together with the measured sound level. As a result, the intended playing dynamics were transmitted from the performer to the listener regardless of the listener’s experience of playing saxophones, while different fingerings or registers of saxophones were not salient for discrimination of the sounds. However, all the members in the saxophone family were rated higher for the attributes “Tsuyoi” (strong), “Ookii” (large), and “Hakuryoku-no-aru” (powerful) at the low-pitched fingering sounds. The ratings of the attributes “Yawarakai” (soft) showed the magnitude opposite to the playing dynamics, and the ratings of “Akarui” (bright) was notably correlated in the tenor saxophone sounds.
