ビデオドキュメンタリーを製作し、喫緊の問題に関する情報を拡散することは一般的になってきた。日本でも、主流のメディアでは取り上げられない日と微々とに声を与える重要な形式になってきている。日本のインデペンデントな映像制作者は、どのような試みをしているのだろうか？映画を通じて個人やコミュニティの物語は、どのように分析されているのだろうか？このシンポジウムでは二人のインデペンデントの映画監督、イアン・ トーマス・アッシュとエイドリアン・ストーリー（a.k.a. Uchujin）を招いて、カメラのレンズを通じて彼らがどのように日本の社会を理解し、経験したのかを議論したい。

Creating video documentaries is a popular trend to spread information on current issues. In Japan, it is also becoming a significant form of giving a voice to people whose perceptions are not covered by the official media. What kind of challenges do independent filmmakers encounter in Japan? What it takes to interpret the story of n Japanese individual person or a community through film? In this symposium two independent filmmakers, Ian Thomas Ash and Adrian Storey (a.k.a. Uchujin) share their insights and experiences of exploring the Japanese society through camera lens.

Ian Thomas Ash (b. 1975, USA) earned an MA in Film and Television Production at the University of Bristol, UK, in 2005. While living in Japan for more than ten years, he has been intrigued to make films on varying social issues. Among Ash’s award winning feature documentaries focusing on Japan are ‘In the Grey Zone’ (89 min/ 2012) and ‘A2-B-C’ (71 min/ 2013). In his latest film, ‘-1287’ (70 min/Japan/2014), Ash follows up the changing perceptions of a lady nearing the end of her life.
Adrian Storey (a.k.a Uchujin, b. 1972, UK), is a self-taught photographer and filmmaker. After traveling for years extensively in Asia, he settled to live in Japan in 2006. Storey started as a freelance photographer before moving mainly to video five years ago. So far, Storey has specialized in short documentaries that usually approach the broader topic through a perception of one individual person His latest films include the ‘281_Anti nuke’ (2014), ‘Only Japanese Imam in Tokyo’ (2013) and ‘Safecast’ (2013).
